What this NEB GPA calculator works out

Type the marks from your Class 11 or Class 12 grade sheet, or pick the letter grades, and the calculator shows:

It follows the Letter Grading Directive 2083 for grades and NG, and the Secondary Education Curriculum 2076 for credit hours, so it works the same for Class 11 and Class 12. It is free, needs no sign-up, and keeps your marks on your own device.

How to use it

  1. Pick your stream. Choose Science, Management or Other (Humanities, Education, Law). The usual subjects for that stream are filled in.
  2. Check your subjects. A subject with a dashed underline can be changed: tap Computer Science to make it Biology, or Business Studies to pick another optional subject. Add an extra subject with Add a subject.
  3. Type your marks. Type the theory mark in the first box and the practical (internal) mark in the second. Enter moves to the next box. If you only have letter grades, switch to Grades.
  4. Read your GPA. Your GPA appears under the subjects and updates with every box. Each subject also shows its final grade, and an NG says which mark is short.
  5. Print or share. Print grade sheet gives an A4 sheet in NEB's layout; Copy link gives a link that opens the same marks.

How NEB calculates your GPA

Your grade sheet has two rows for most subjects: theory (TH) and internal (IN). Each row is graded on its own, then the rows are averaged by credit hours. That is why you cannot add your theory and practical marks together and grade the total: two students with the same total can get different GPAs.

  1. Turn each part into a percentage. 62 out of 75 in Physics theory is 82.67%.
  2. Read its grade point off the scale below. 82.67% is A, worth 3.6.
  3. Multiply by that part's credit hours. A 5 credit hour subject marked 75/25 gives theory 3.75 and internal 1.25 credit hours. Computer Science, marked 50/50, gives 2.5 and 2.5.
  4. Add every part of every subject, then divide by the total credit hours. For the usual six subjects that total is 27.
GPA = Σ(grade point × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours), rounded to two decimals

Worked example, one subject. Physics theory 62/75 is A (3.6) over 3.75 credit hours. Physics internal 23/25 is 92%, A+ (4.0) over 1.25 credit hours. (3.6 × 3.75 + 4.0 × 1.25) ÷ 5 = 18.5 ÷ 5 = 3.70, which the grade sheet prints as a final grade of A+.

Whole sheet. Nepali 60/20, English 68/22, Mathematics 50/24, Physics 55/21, Chemistry 45/22, Computer Science 40/45 adds up to 92.4 grade-point credit hours over 27 credit hours: a GPA of 3.42. Open this example

NEB grading scale (Letter Grading Directive 2083)

The Curriculum Development Centre replaced the 2078 directive with the Letter Grading Directive 2083 in Baisakh 2083. For Class 11 and 12 the scale did not change. Each band starts at its percentage and stops just below the next one, so 90.00% is A+ and 89.99% is A.

The marks columns are the lowest score that earns each grade on a paper of that size. If an older calculator shows D+, E or a 0.8 grade point, it is using the scale from before 2078, which no longer applies to Class 11 and 12.

From a subject's grade point to its final grade

A subject's theory and practical grade points are averaged by credit hours, and the result is shown as its final grade:

Weighted grade pointFinal grade
above 3.6, up to 4.0A+
above 3.2, up to 3.6A
above 2.8, up to 3.2B+
above 2.4, up to 2.8B
above 2.0, up to 2.4C+
above 1.6, up to 2.0C

NEB has not published this table. It is read from issued grade sheets, where a weighted 3.7 prints as A+ and exactly 3.6 as A.

When a subject is NG

Subjects it supports

Every Class 11 and 12 student takes Nepali (3 credit hours), English (4), and Social Studies and Life Skills or Mathematics (5), plus three optional subjects of 5 credit hours each. A subject name with a dashed underline can be changed in place, and Add a subject adds any other.

Science

Starts with Nepali, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. Change Computer Science to Biology from its name, or keep it and add Biology as a fourth optional subject if you take both. Optional Mathematics is in the list as well.

Management

Starts with Nepali, English, Social Studies and Life Skills, Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies. Business Studies can be changed to Computer Science, Hotel Management, Business Mathematics, Marketing, Finance, Tourism and Mountaineering or Co-operative Management, and Social Studies to Mathematics.

Humanities, Education, Law and other streams

Other starts with Nepali, English, Social Studies and Life Skills and three optional subjects, Sociology, Psychology and Economics, each changeable to History, Geography, Political Science, Optional English, Optional Nepali, Mass Communication, Rural Development or any other listed subject. A subject that is not listed can be added by name with its theory and practical marks (75/25, 50/50 or 100/0); Education and Law subjects change title between Class 11 and 12, so add them that way.

Credit hours and full marks for every subject

Every Class 11 and 12 student takes Nepali (3 credit hours), English (4), and Social Studies and Life Skills or Mathematics (5), plus three optional subjects of 5 credit hours each: 27 in total. A subject's credit hours split between theory and internal in the same ratio as its marks. The internal code on your grade sheet is the theory code plus one, so Physics 1021 has internal 1022.

* We could not confirm this subject's theory and internal split in the curriculum text, so it uses the standard 75/25 (Hotel Management uses its 50 mark written paper). A ? means we could not confirm that Class 11 code.

Teachers, seniors and AI assistants can send a student a link that opens the calculator with the marks already in. Each subject is subject=theory, internal. Marks and letter grades both work, and anything left out stays blank.

About this calculator

This is the successor of the NEB GPA calculator at neb.paudelanuj.com.np, rebuilt from scratch by the WideMath team, the makers of the free online scientific calculator. The old version always divided by 27 credit hours, whatever you entered, and its help table used the grading scale from before 2078. This one grades theory and practical separately, divides by the credit hours you actually take, and applies the NG rules of the 2083 directive. The old address is moving here.

NEB GPA calculator questions

How is NEB GPA calculated for Class 11 and 12?
Theory and practical (internal) marks are graded separately. Each part gets a grade point from its own percentage (A+ is 90% and above, worth 4.0). Each grade point is multiplied by that part's credit hours, the results are added up, and the total is divided by the total credit hours. A 5 credit hour subject marked 75/25 has 3.75 theory and 1.25 internal credit hours.
What is the pass mark in NEB Class 11 and 12?
You need at least a D (35%) in theory and at least a C (40%) in internal or practical in every subject. Below that the subject is NG. An internal mark of 35% to 39.99% prints as D but still does not meet the C requirement.
What happens to my GPA if I get NG in a subject?
NEB issues the GPA-bearing grade sheet and certificate only after you have the minimum grade in every subject, so the calculator shows NG instead of a GPA. You can resit the failed subject, and Class 12 students with NG in up to two subjects can take the supplementary exam. The calculator also shows roughly what your GPA would be if you cleared the subject at the minimum grade.
Can I calculate my GPA from grades instead of marks?
Yes. Switch the calculator from Marks to Grades and pick the theory and practical letter grade of each subject from your grade sheet. The GPA is worked out the same way, from each grade's grade point and its credit hours.
Does the calculator work for Class 11 as well as Class 12?
Yes. Class 11 and Class 12 use the same grading scale, the same subjects and the same credit hours, so the same sheet works for both. Your school issues the Class 11 GPA and NEB issues the Class 12 GPA, each on its own grade sheet.
How many credit hours does Class 12 Science have?
27: Nepali 3, English 4, and four subjects at 5 credit hours each (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science or Biology). Class 11 has the same 27. An extra subject adds 5 more.
Is Computer Science graded differently from Biology?
Yes. Computer Science is 50 theory and 50 internal marks, so its 5 credit hours split 2.5 and 2.5. Biology, Physics and Chemistry are 75 theory and 25 internal, which splits 3.75 and 1.25. A strong practical therefore moves a Computer Science grade more.
Which subjects does this calculator support?
Nepali, English, Social Studies and Life Skills and Mathematics; Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Optional Mathematics for Science; Accountancy, Economics, Business Studies, Business Mathematics, Hotel Management, Marketing, Finance, Tourism and Mountaineering and Co-operative Management for Management; and Sociology, Psychology, History, Geography, Political Science, Optional English, Optional Nepali, Mass Communication and Rural Development. Any other subject can be added by name.
Is a GPA of exactly 3.6 an A or an A+?
On NEB grade sheets a weighted 3.6 shows as A and anything above 3.6 shows as A+, so each final grade covers the range above the next grade point up to its own. NEB has not published this rule in writing; it is read from issued grade sheets.
Can I convert my NEB GPA to a percentage?
NEB's grade sheet reports letter grades and a GPA, not a percentage, and the Letter Grading Directive gives no formula to turn a GPA back into a percentage. If a college or a university abroad asks for one, use the method that institution sets.
Can I add an extra subject or a subject that is not listed?
Yes. Add any listed subject, or add one that is not listed by its name and its theory and practical marks. Every subject you add counts toward the GPA, and the total credit hours grow to match, so the GPA can never go above 4.0.
Are my marks saved or sent anywhere?
Your marks are kept in your browser on this device, so they are still there when you come back, and Clear all removes them. Nothing you type is sent to a server. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, which never sees your marks.
Can I share a filled-in calculator as a link?
Yes. Copy link puts your stream, subjects and marks in the address, and anyone who opens it sees the same grade sheet. The format is subject=theory, internal, for example physics=55,21.
What happened to neb.paudelanuj.com.np?
It was the first NEB GPA calculator from the same maker. This page is its successor: the subjects, the grading rules and the interface were rebuilt, and the old address is moving here.
