Free Online Scientific Calculator

A truly scientific calculator online that works like a real handheld, right in your browser. Not a basic calculator with a few extra buttons: 8 full calculation modes and exact fraction and surd results, completely free from WideMath.

Most online "scientific" calculators only cover trigonometry, logarithms and roots. This one does the full job: calculus, matrices, complex numbers, statistics, equation solving and base-N, with exact results, no download and no sign up. It even works offline once loaded.

What Makes a Calculator Truly Scientific?

Search "scientific calculator" and most results, including big names like Desmos and Google, are really basic calculators with trig and log keys bolted on. A genuine scientific calculator goes much further. Here's the difference:

How to Use This Online Scientific Calculator

No account and no manual required, but if you want the full walkthrough, here's how the six steps work.

  1. Pick a mode. Press MODE and choose COMP for everyday calculations, or CMPLX, STAT, BASE-N, EQN, MATRIX, VECTOR, or TABLE for specialized math.
  2. Enter your expression. Click the on-screen keys or type on your keyboard. Results stay exact, so a fraction stays a fraction and a surd stays a surd.
  3. Unlock extra functions with SHIFT and ALPHA. SHIFT gives you each key's yellow function (like ∫dx or x!); ALPHA gives you the red variable/letter functions. Available keys light up while a modifier is held.
  4. Press = to evaluate. Trailing brackets close automatically, so cos(45 evaluates the same as cos(45).
  5. Toggle exact vs. decimal form. Use the FRAC pill or the S⇔D key to switch a result between fractions/surds and decimals.
  6. Reuse work with memory and history. STO/RCL save values to variables A to F, X, Y; the history panel keeps every past calculation one tap away.

Scientific Calculator Guides and Worked Examples

Every function on this calculator has a written walkthrough with a worked example you can retype key for key. Twenty nine guides, grouped by topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this online scientific calculator free?
Yes, completely free, forever. No account, no subscription, no app download required. It runs entirely in your browser. You can also install it to your home screen as a PWA for offline use.
What makes a calculator truly scientific?
A basic "scientific" calculator only adds trigonometry, logarithms, powers and roots to a four-function calculator. A truly scientific calculator also handles definite integration and differentiation, summation, matrices and vectors, complex numbers, equation solving, statistics with regression, and base-N (binary/hex) arithmetic. This one does all of it, across 8 calculation modes, and keeps results exact so fractions stay fractions and surds stay surds.
How is this different from the Desmos or Google scientific calculator?
Desmos and Google are great for everyday scientific math such as trigonometry, logarithms and roots. But they don't handle matrices, complex numbers, base-N and bitwise arithmetic, equation solving (quadratic, cubic, simultaneous), or numerical integration and differentiation. This WideMath calculator does, using the MODE, SHIFT and ALPHA keypad workflow of a handheld scientific calculator.
How do I compute a definite integral online?
In COMP mode, type ∫( then your function, a comma, the lower limit, a comma, and the upper limit. Example: ∫(x², 0, 3) returns 9. Supports any expression math.js can evaluate.
Can I use this as a derivative calculator?
Yes. Use the syntax d/dx(f(x), a) to compute the numerical derivative at point a. Example: d/dx(x³, 2) returns 12. Works for trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, and polynomial functions.
How do I solve a quadratic equation?
Press MODE and select EQN, then choose degree 2. Enter coefficients a, b, c for the equation ax²+bx+c=0 and press = to get both roots, real or complex.
How do I convert decimal to binary or hexadecimal?
Press MODE → BASE-N. Type your number in DEC mode, then press the BIN or HEX sub-mode button to see the conversion instantly. Supports BIN, OCT, DEC, and HEX.
Does this calculator support complex numbers?
Yes. Switch to CMPLX mode. Enter expressions like 3+4i (rectangular) or 5∠53.13 (polar). The calculator returns the result in whichever form you choose and supports modulus, argument, and conjugate operations.
Can I do matrix calculations online?
Yes. Switch to MATRIX mode to define matrices A, B, C (up to 3×3) and perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, determinant (det), inverse, and transpose operations.
Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?
Yes. The calculator scales automatically to fit any screen size. On iOS and Android you can tap Add to Home Screen in your browser to install it as an app, and it then works offline too.
Does it work like the scientific calculator I use in class?
Yes. It follows the layout most classroom and exam scientific calculators share: a MODE key for COMP, CMPLX, STAT, BASE-N, EQN, MATRIX, TABLE and VECTOR, a SHIFT layer for the second function printed above each key, and an ALPHA layer for variables. If you have used a handheld scientific calculator from Casio, Canon or Sharp, most keystrokes will feel familiar. WideMath is an independent tool and is not affiliated with any calculator maker.
Is this a Casio fx-991ES PLUS calculator online?
It is a Casio-style scientific calculator inspired by the fx-991ES PLUS: the same MODE, SHIFT and ALPHA workflow and the same eight modes (COMP, CMPLX, STAT, BASE-N, EQN, MATRIX, TABLE, VECTOR), with exact fractions and surds. It is not an emulator and not an official Casio product, and a few keys sit in different places. WideMath is not affiliated with Casio.
How do I use keyboard shortcuts?
Type digits and operators directly. Enter computes the result, Backspace deletes, Escape clears, arrow keys move the cursor, and ↑ ↓ scroll through expression history. ^ for powers, % for percent, ! for factorial.
Is there a scientific calculator online with SHIFT SOLVE?
Yes. Press SHIFT then SOLVE to solve an equation for an unknown. Type the equation using ALPHA X for the variable, for example X²−5X+6=0, then press SHIFT SOLVE and give a starting guess. The calculator iterates to a root the same way a handheld scientific calculator does. SHIFT also reaches the second function printed above each key, and ALPHA reaches the variables.
Is there a scientific calculator online with modes?
Yes. Press MODE to switch between 8 calculation modes: COMP for everyday maths, CMPLX for complex numbers, STAT for statistics and regression, BASE-N for binary, octal and hex, EQN for simultaneous, quadratic and cubic equations, MATRIX, TABLE for tables of function values, and VECTOR. All of it is free, with no account, no trial and no paid tier.
Is this a natural display calculator online?
Not exactly, and it is worth being precise. The entry line is linear, so a fraction is typed and shown as 1÷3 rather than stacked as it would appear in a textbook. What you get instead is exact results: √8 stays 2√2, 0.1+0.2 returns 3/10, and 1÷3×3 returns exactly 1. Most browser calculators round all three. If stacked textbook entry is what you need, this is not that tool.
Is this a scientific calculator with fractions?
Yes, and fractions stay fractions. 1÷2+1÷3 returns 5/6, not 0.8333333333, and 100÷7 stays 100/7. Press the S⇔D key to flip any result between exact form and decimal. Mixed numbers and improper fractions are both supported.
Is this an online 10 digit scientific calculator?
Results display to 10 significant digits, the same as most handheld scientific calculators, and whole numbers up to 15 digits are shown in full, so 123456789012 stays 123456789012. The internal computation carries more precision than it shows, so rounding does not accumulate. Larger values switch to exponential notation, for example 1.234567891e+15, and anything up to about 1.8e+308 is in range.
Does sin(180) give 0 on this calculator?
Yes. In DEG mode sin(180) returns exactly 0, cos(90) returns 0, and tan(90) returns Math ERROR, which is what the physical calculator does. Many browser calculators return 1.2246e-16 for sin(180) because they convert degrees using a floating point approximation of pi. That is a quick way to test any online calculator before you trust it.
How do I do decimal to binary on this calculator?
Press MODE and choose BASE-N. Enter the number while DEC is selected, then press BIN and the binary form replaces it. HEX and OCT work the same way, and the bitwise keys AND, OR, XOR, XNOR and NOT operate in whichever base is active.
Can I use it as a definite integral calculator?
Yes. In COMP mode type ∫( followed by the function, the lower limit and the upper limit, separated by commas. ∫(x², 0, 3) returns 9. Integration is numerical rather than symbolic, so it gives a value rather than an antiderivative.
Does this scientific calculator work offline?
Yes. After the page has loaded once, your browser keeps a copy of the calculator, so it opens and works with no internet connection. On a phone you can also add it to your home screen and open it like an app.
Can I use this online calculator in an exam?
Usually not. Most exams allow only an approved handheld calculator and do not allow phones or laptops, so check your exam rules. WideMath is built for practice and for checking your working before the exam, with the same MODE, SHIFT and ALPHA keypad logic as a handheld, so the key sequences you learn here carry over.
Who makes WideMath?
WideMath is made by a small independent team in Nepal: Anuj Paudel, Ashish Pandey and Jhalak Prasad Pandey. It is free, has no ads and is not affiliated with Casio or any other calculator maker. Read why we built it.
